Czech Republic captain Tomas Rosicky considers international retirement

Published on Jun 22 2012 // Czech Republic, EURO 2012

Czech Republic  captain  Tomas Rosicky is considering retirement from international football after Michal Bilek ‘s side were knocked out of Euro 2012 at the quarter-final stage on Thursday night. The Arsenal midfielder missed the 1-0 defeat to Portugal in Warsaw due to an Achilles injury and the 31-year-old admitted he does not know if he will lead the Narodak out for the World Cup qualifiers. “I know I’m not the youngest anymore,” Rosicky said. “I’ve had problems with my health so I will take time to think. “I would love to continue but I’m not stupid, I know I’m getting older and older.” Rosicky was forced to watch from the bench as his side were sent home by Cristiano Ronaldo’s diving header in the 79th minute. The playmaker accepted after the game that the Seleccao had been the better side but believes the Czechs should be proud of their efforts in the tournament, having qualified from a group including Russia, Poland and Greece. Rosicky added: “We can go back home with our heads held high. We lost to the better team and there is nothing to be ashamed of. “I don’t think we have exceeded expectations. It was our goal to qualify from the group and try our best in the next round. “I think Portugal deserve to go through, they were the better team. Good luck and well done to them. “In the second half we couldn’t keep the ball anymore and they put us under enormous pressure.” The former Borussia Dortmund man has 87 international caps.
