Mertesacker unfazed after Germany’s defeat to Switzerland

Published on May 28 2012 // EURO 2012, Germany, Group B

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is unfazed by Germany ’s 5-3 friendly defeat to Switzerland , and feels confident that Joachim Low ’s men will hit the ground running when Euro 2012 begins next month. Germany Switzerland 5-3 Germany The centre-back found himself alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels in the heart of the German defence in Basel on Saturday, in a performance that did little to reassure the fans ahead of the trip to Poland and Ukraine. The former Werder Bremen man had been sidelined through injury since February, and was understandably rusty against their Alpine neighbours, but Mertesacker feels that it is too early to judge his compatriots. “Yesterday was very disappointing for us but we’re looking forward to the tournament,” he told Sky Sports News . “It’s in two weeks and we’ll be in good shape I think.” Although they boast a relatively young side, Mertesacker is sure that recent successes in major tournaments will help foster a winning mentality for the Germans this summer. Germany were runners-up to Spain in the last European Championships four years ago, and finished third in an encouraging World Cup campaign in 2010. However, Low’s charges have been drawn into a tough Euro 2012 group, which features the likes of Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands. “It’s the toughest group in the Euros but we have great experience in the last few tournaments,” Mertesacker continued. “Therefore we are very confident and hopefully we can do a good job.”
